The effects of payoff magnitude and heterogeneity on behavior in 2×2 games with unique mixed strategy equilibria

چکیده
The Logit version of Quantal Response Equilibrium (QRE) predicts that equilibrium behavior in games will vary systematically with payoff magnitudes, if all other factors are held constant (including the Nash equilibria of the game). We explore this in the context of a set of asymmetric 2×2 games with unique totally mixed strategy equilibria. The data provide little support for the payoff magnitude predictions of the Logit Equilibrium model. We extend the theoretical QRE model to allow for heterogeneity, and find that the data fit the heterogeneous version of the theory significantly better. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. The effects of risk preferences in mixed-strategy equilibria of 2×2 games
We consider the effects of risk preferences in mixed-strategy equilibria of 2 × 2 games, provided such equilibria exist. We identify sufficient conditions under which the expected payoff in the mixed equilibrium increases or decreases with the degree of risk aversion. We find that (at least moderate degrees of) risk aversion will frequently be beneficial in mixed equilibria. © 2007 Elsevier Inc...
متن کاملOn the existence of equilibria in discontinuous games: three counterexamples
We study whether we can weaken the conditions given in Reny [4] and still obtain existence of pure strategy Nash equilibria in quasiconcave normal form games, or, at least, existence of pure strategy ε−equilibria for all ε > 0. We show by examples that there are: 1. quasiconcave, payoff secure games without pure strategy ε−equilibria for small enough ε > 0 (and hence, without pure strategy Nash...
متن کاملEvolution and Mixed Strategies
Selten (1980, J. Theoret. Biol., 84, 93–101) showed that no mixed equilibria are evolutionarily stable when players can condition their strategies on their roles in a game. Alternatively, Harsanyi’s (1973, Int. J. Game Theory, 2, 1–23) purification argument implies that all mixed equilibria are approximations of strict, and hence evolutionarily stable, equilibria of games with slightly perturbe...
متن کاملHow to play (3×3)-games.: A strategy method experiment
Using the strategy method (Selten 1967) we elicit subjects' strategies for playing any 2-person 3x3-game with integer payoffs between 0 and 99. In each of 5 tournaments, every strategy pair plays 500000 games. The frequency of pure strategy equilibrium play increases from 51% in the first to 74% in the last tournament, with the equilibria that maximize joint payoff being preferred when multiple...
متن کاملOn the commitment value and commitment optimal strategies in bimatrix games
Given a bimatrix game, the associated leadership or commitment games are defined as the games at which one player, the leader, commits to a (possibly mixed) strategy and the other player, the follower, chooses his strategy after having observed the irrevocable commitment of the leader. Based on a result by von Stengel and Zamir [2010], the notions of commitment value and commitment optimal stra...
